National charity working to eradicate group B Strep infection in babies, support families affected and improve both prevention and treatment. Group B Strep is the leading cause of life-threatening infection in newborn babies, causing sepsis, pneumonia and meningitis. GBS is also the most common cause of meningitis in babies under age 5 in the UK. Most group B Strep infections in newborn babies can be prevented with simple antibiotics (usually penicillin) given in labour to women known to be carrying group B Strep at the time. In countries that routinely test all pregnant women for GBS, the rates of these infections in newborn babies have fallen dramatically. In the UK, where this is not offered, the rates continue to rise. www.gbss.org.uk
