The World as a Classroom
By Emma Swanson, CEO Front Row Education

"Certainly, travel is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living’
Miriam Beard

In recent years we have moved away from textbook classrooms to an education based on experiential learning. It has been widely acknowledged that we all learn most effectively when we are provided with kinaesthetic opportunities or when we are able to ‘live’ through an experience.

Having recently travelled with my own family, it became increasingly apparent that the learning that was taking place was truly meaningful. Suddenly an understanding of another religion emerged by living amongst people who lived it daily; an awareness of the impact of the climate was born by experiencing the effects of the heat and an acceptance of social difference seemed a natural conclusion, when surrounded by a culturally diverse environment.

‘Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry and narrow-mindedness’
Mark Twain

The experience of travelling is one that is described as an education in itself. Opening children’s eyes to the cultural diversity that exists in the world around them; immersing children into a new language; providing truly experiential learning opportunities by visiting ancient ruins, witnessing coastal erosion and exploring jungle environments. The richness of this sort of education is what we, as teachers, aspire to provide to all our students in the classroom but what a difference to be able to enable children to really live it out and for their life to be an education without text books...

Many of our clients at Front Row Education opt to employ a full time tutor so that they can provide their own children with this form of education. Travel opportunities arise in life for a variety of reasons and it is through the provision of a private tutor that these families are able to realise their dreams of turning the world into a classroom. Clients are able to accept overseas posts, knowing that their children will make superb academic progress with the full time attention of a teacher. Taking a jump away from mainstream schooling can feel daunting but the success that results from such travelling opportunities makes it a move worth making. To awaken a child’s natural curiosity and enable real learning to occur. Educational enrichment with a fully qualified travelling tutor must surely be an ideal option?

At Front Row Education we are always happy to discuss individual requirements and will work closely with you to ensure that we find the right tutor for your family.

The London Leaders programme was set up by the London Sustainable Development Commission (LSDC) and launched in October 2007. The programme brings together some of the most exciting and innovative new leaders in sustainable business and communities supporting them to demonstrate sustainability in action and the contribution of green entrepreneurs to the London economy and the city’s quality of life. The ten new Leaders have
been announced by Greg Barker MP, the newly appointed Chair of the London Sustainable Development Commission, the body which advises Mayor of London Boris Johnson on sustainability issues in the capital.

Greg Barker hoped this year’s Leaders would inspire Londoners to see the real commercial potential of green businesses. He said: “The new
London Leaders are an impressive group of bright-minded, entrepreneurial talent. Not only can these businesses thrive in their own right but
they will act as a catalyst to others who want to conduct business in a sustainable way. The city is already a global centre for green business and
the LSDC will take a lead role in ensuring that the capital’s green economy goes from strength to strength.”

Chainy is an online platform that brings together talented, creative people. The project seeks to help boost equality of opportunity in London’s creative industries by offering a platform to connect skills with need. Creative people are the people who can help sustainability related organisations communicate their messages and make them accessible, interesting and appealing to the public.

"People are all about emotions, and creative people are the ones who can help touch those emotions."
Alexander Lushnikov

#JST Vision and Voice from the Middle East saw 78 Fellows from the John Smith Trust -FCO Arab Partnership Programme return to London for a three-day event from the 6th-8th March 2015 to celebrate the establishment of the Middle East Leadership Network and the 120 social action projects now being implemented across the region since 2011.

Fellows from 2014 reported on projects promoting the Rule of Law and good governance in Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Oman.
