Founded in 1996 to provide a permanent memorial to one of Britain's best-loved politicians, the John Smith Trust promotes the ideals that he held dear - public service, social justice, and good governance. The Trust is a registered Charity, not a party-political organisation; it has active support from all the major parties. The John Smith Fellowship Programme is aimed at the next generation of leaders in a number of the independent republics that were previously part of the Soviet Union, and also in the Middle East & North Africa (MENA) region, targeting young people of proven ability and real attainments, regardless of their political background.
