Sochi Olympics Shows Off Russia's Style

At the beginning of February, the XXII Winter Olympics opened with a spectacular ceremony in the Russian resort city of Sochi. Selected as the host city in July 2007, the Sochi 2014 Opening Ceremony started at exactly 20:14 Moscow Time, symbolising the year of the first Winter Games in Russia's history. The ceremony told the fantastic history of Russia, celebrating the country's rich heritage in art, music and ballet, and is set to be remembered for its scale, entertainment, unique scenery and innovative use of technology.

Athletes representing 88 countries paraded before 40,000 spectators in the Fisht Stadium before president Vladimir Putin declared the Games open. In a break from Olympic tradition, the teams entered in the order of the Russian alphabet, with the host nation coming in last to deafening cheers.

In a grand finale, tennis star Maria Sharapova, who grew up in Sochi, carried the Olympic flame into the stadium before it was passed to pole vault world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva, wrestler Aleksandr Karelin, and gymnast Alina Kabaeva. The flame was carried out of the arena by former figure skater Rodnina and ice hockey player Tretiak, who lit the cauldron in the middle of the Olympic park to Stravinksy's "Firebird Suite".

For this year's games, there were a total of 98 events in 15 winter sport disciplines. 12 new competitions were added, including biathlon mixed relay, women's ski jumping, mixed-team figure skating, mixed-team luge, half-pipe skiing, ski and snowboard slopestyle, and snowboard parallel slalom. The events were held around two clusters of new venues; an Olympic Park constructed in Sochi's Imeretinsky Valley on the coast of the Black Sea, with Fisht Olympic Stadium and the Games' indoor venues located within walking distance, and snow events in the resort settlement of Krasnaya Polyana.

Hosts Russia finished at the top of the medal table with 13 Gold medals - 33 medals in total. South Korea were given the Olympic flag as Pyeongchang will host the games in 2018.
